In late 2013, the majority of human civilisation is destroyed by a highly contagious fungal infection that rapidly transforms its victims into aggressive and mindless monsters.

Ive seen John and Angela Marston kiss, Meryl and Snake. The Last of Us is a video game from Naughty Dog.It was released on the PlayStation 3 on June 14, 2013, with a PlayStation 4 version released on July 29, 2014. The Last of Us is no exception to this, and features numerous empowering female characters that can survive just as well as the male characters in the world, such as Ellie, Marlene, Maria, and Riley. Its the first example of intimacy in a videogame thats meant anything to me.
#The last of us dlc ellie and riley kiss tv
I was starting to find solace in TV shows like Orange is the New Black and old reruns of Will and Grace, but even the gay relationship options in Mass Effect 3 and the like didn’t feel like enough. Towards the end of Left Behind, Ellie and Riley share a kiss. The dredge of queerbaiting and the eventual disappointment began to take its toll on me. Up until 2014’s The Last of Us: Left Behind DLC, I was not aware of a mainstream video game protagonist that was gay. The kiss that she and Riley share is quite clearly not one of friendship.

I love having the community that I’ve been so fortunate to find, but I worry for the younger generation what struggles will LGBTQ+ people face in seeking acceptance and positive representation in the video games that they love? Ellie changed up the game in her ‘Last of Us’ gay coming out In Left Behind, however, it is revealed that Ellie is possibly lesbian or bisexual. We gather in groups at gay bars and college university clubs to define a safe space for LGBTQ+ people to enjoy video games. These characters are not related to each other in any way, but they are honorable mentions when it comes to all LGBTQ+ characters in The Last of Us. It didn’t seem like there was a place for me in the straight cis male world of video games.Īs an adult, I’ve been able to find many LGBTQ+ people that feel the same way. It was when I came out of the closet in my teens that I realized just how lost I felt. For many, I appeared to be a straight cis male, and therefore did not disrupt the norm of what society considered to be a suitable video game player. And yet, I found myself fitting between the lines.
